Being part of the most prestigious and oldest university in Bulgaria Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” – Faculty of journalism and mass communication is the first which offers a training in journalism in Bulgaria. With the opening of the Journalism specialty at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Sofia, higher academic education in journalism in Bulgaria began in 1952-1953.
The Faculty of Journalism was set up in 1974.
In 1991 the Faculty of Journalism was renamed the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication to better match the broader scope of the educational content and the inclusion of new programmes and content in the academic portfolio of the faculty. The Journalism programme allows students to acquire the expertise needed in the dynamic journalistic profession as well to understand their role in contemporary society and to have a real world orientation.
During decades the faculty has become a byword for school for teaching quality journalism. The students have opportunity to receive the theoretical knowledge and in the same time to do practical trainings and internships. Along with journalism education, training in public relations, book publishing, and communication management is offered also. Dozens of masters and doctoral programs and postgraduate qualifications prepare highly qualified specialists who find fulfillment in all areas of media and public communication.
The faculty is an active participant in many research national and international projects in the main areas of journalism studies, some aspects of cultural studies and mass communication.
The faculty is an active member of European academic networks – EJTA, ECREA, and EUPRERA.
